Embracing My Hijab: A Journey to Peace
Despite living in a country founded on Islamic values which always appreciate women, the tale of a girl finding her way to break out of the boundaries of societal norms is seldom told. This is my story, a girl who embraced her hijab and finally found my peace with it.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
The decision to wear the hijab is one that is based on one's own beliefs and convictions. Girls may experience a mixture of feelings as they set out on this new journey of apprehension and empowerment. The hijab has evolved from a simple article of apparel to a representation of modesty, decency, and devotion to religious principles. Since the hijab strengthens their ties to their religious and cultural identity, many girls report feeling more confident about who they are and what they want to achieve in life.
In my experience, I had no different feelings. While growing up in Pakistan, my biggest ideal was my mother. She started her hijab in Pakistan after her wedding, and inspired me to do so too. The first time I wore a hijab was when I was 7 years old, and we went to Umrah. At that time, there weren't many options for hijabs for women. So, I chose the best for my mama and the second best for myself. At that time, I didn’t know the true meaning of hijab; I just loved wearing it, twinning with my mom.
THE DECISION TO WEAR THE HIJAB:
With time, the feeling of happiness that emerged from wearing a hijab turned into a feeling of comfort. I started wearing it more frequently, adorning myself with hijabs wherever I went. Finally, the day came when I decided to embrace the hijab fully. I discussed the matter with my family, and they showed me immense support and encouragement.
At first, I felt super nervous in gatherings, as I was the only one of my friends and cousins wearing a hijab. The fear of being the odd-one-out slowly started to get into my head and after a while, I decided not to wear the hijab. That day, when I stepped out of the house, I felt as if someone had taken all my confidence away. I felt extremely uncomfortable and scared, which made me realize how much the hijab meant to me.
Eventually, as I moved ahead into my hijab journey, more of my friends started wearing it too. This was an additional motivation, which kept me on my path and did not let me get swept away.
Benefits of Wearing a Hijab:
One benefit of wearing a hijab at such a young age is that I no longer recognize the boundary between my hijab and myself. It is an integral part of who I am—my shield and my second skin.
As a hijabi girl, I faced many challenges and prejudices, mostly from fellow women. At every family function, I was asked to remove the hijab in front of my cousins because “they were like my brothers and I didn’t need to hide myself from them”. Most of the aunties in my family started to speculate that all my efforts to maintain my hijab were a tactic to get attention. At every gathering, I was looked down upon for not flaunting my physical appearance in front of my family. What no one understood was, I did that for myself, so not to show everyone. I feel safe and protected in my hijab, and that’s the only thing that matters.
PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT:
Wearing a hijab isn’t just an act, it's a journey to personal development. It acts as a continual reminder of a woman’s dedication to modesty and faith, and gives them a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose via this journey of self-discovery.
Eventually, while I was en route to my journey of self-acceptance, I reached the age where I was supposed to find a good match and step into marital life. If you live in Pakistan, and more accurately, if you’re a woman, you might be quite familiar with the old-age tradition of presenting yourself to the prospect along with a tea trolley.
I also did countless ramp walks in search of a good proposal, but was eventually put down because “if I wore a hijab in front of my brother-in-laws, I might divide my husband from his brothers.” I never understood the logic behind my hijab being a problem, but I wasn't disheartened. My belief in Allah was very strong. I used to get advice from aunts and grandparents to take it off in order to look younger or more beautiful. They even questioned how we would ever find a respectable proposal.
Gladly, my parents were there for me, telling me every step of the way that whatever I was doing was great, and I didn’t have to worry about anything. Whatever Allah has written to me, will make its way to me, and that was enough to keep my heart at peace.
Changes in a Life of Hijab Girl:
Once a girl starts wearing a hijab, her life takes a major turn. She feels love, doubt, prejudices, appreciation, and criticism, all at the same time. But as a hijabi girl myself, I can say that people change their opinion about us.
Girls frequently describe feeling more empowered and respectable of themselves. They can concentrate on their intelligence, character, and abilities rather than their outward beauty. This change in emphasis can result in more self-assurance and assertiveness in a variety of spheres of life, including social and intellectual relationships.
Women who wear the hijab focus their spiritual development over social expectations, which can develop inner strength, confidence, and self-respect. I feel so blessed that I am a Muslim woman, and Allah has protected us in this way.
